Bullying - Stop Your Child from Being Bullied!

The Bullied Child - How Parents Can Help

Bullying is a big deal. When a bullied child fills his mind with revenge, bad things can happen.

Or he thinks thoughts like:

  1. Nobody likes me.
  2. I’m so ugly.
  3. I’m stupid.

His mind recycles many painful thoughts. He may turn his pain into self-shame.

In this post, I will share how a parent of elementary age children can counsel their bullied child with ideas that work.

How Your Bullied Child Is a Big Deal for the You

Raising a Bullied Child Hurts You Too

Imagine your child, Samuel, hates school. You talk to his teacher. She says, “Your child is being bullied and he has no friends.”

You learn what kids yell at him and it breaks your heart because the name-calling happens over and over.

Now Sam avoids eye contact. He doesn’t talk. He stays alone in his room. Lately, he pouts, grunts his answers, and often cries. His behavior hurts you because you love him so much.

What can you do?

  1. Go to him. Hug and hold him gently. Say, “I know something is wrong.”
  2. Tell Sam what you’ve noticed about his behavior that tells you he’s unhappy.
  3. Ask him, “What’s going on, Sam?”

If Sam cries or just grunts say, “Here’s a way to let your feelings out. Take this pillow. Punch it as hard as you can. Do it over and over until you feel better. I’ll be here if you need me.”

When Sam’s done ask, “What was that all about?”

Listen without interruption. When he stops talking say, “Tell me more.”

The Stress Drawing Technique

The painful picture:

Tell Sam to draw a picture of his feelings. The picture could be dark scribbles, a stick picture of himself, or something else. Say, “Tell me about your picture.”

Appreciate what your child told you. Say, “Thank you for sharing your pain with me.

The positive picture

Ask Sam to:

  1. “Draw a picture of how you would like things to be.”
  2. “Brainstorm 3 good ideas to try for making your positive picture come true.”

The Bullying Plan

Because bullying is a big deal, include your child in the plan. Make sure he will cooperate. Tell him, “No one deserves to be bullied and that means you.” Here's How:

Parenting Gift: How to Teach Kids Gratefulness

Listen to Your Child

Teach The Gratitude Review to Your Child

The power of gratitude shapes positive thoughts. Upbeat thinking promotes a happier heart. If you’d like to raise an optimistic child, consider The Gratitude Review as a bedtime activity. It’s so easy.

The Simple Method for Increasing Gratitude:

At bedtime ask, “What happened today that you’re grateful for?”

Give your child time to think. Make sure it’s something that’s completely positive. If she says,

“I had fun playing soccer during recess but when it was over…”

The word ‘but’ tells you something unpleasant is about to follow. Help her practice finding pleasant events that started and ended with a satisfying experience.

This Bedtime Exchange Helps Parents and Children:

  1. Develop closeness.
  2. Discuss positive daily events.
  3. Share happy feelings.
  4. End the day on a joyful note.
  5. Sleep with happy memories.

Family 4 talking SMALL

Kids Respect and Trust Truthful Parents

LYING HURTS YOUR CHILD'S REPUTATION AND BREEDS DISTRUST.  If you're the parent of an elementary-age student, who has trouble telling the truth, can you remember a time when you told a falsehood? If it had bad consequences, can you remember your feelings? Were you plagued with guilt? Were you afraid to confess for fear of punishment?

Lies can cause your child mental pain too. Today's article shares 7 fearful consequences from lying, 7 positive effects for being truthful, 6 honest strategies, 5 moral dilemmas for your child to solve, and 10 self-talk statements from which to choose.

 HONESTY BEGINS AT HOME!

Children look up to parents with eager eyes and ears. They see and hear everything.  When parent's aren't truthful, kids learn about lying. When parents are truthful, kids trust and respect them. Use the tips in this article to model truthfulness and help your child.

3 Suggestions to Tell Your Child When He Is Ready to Admit His Mistakes:

1. "Avoid over-thinking about the action you are about to take. It might stop you from telling the truth."
2. "Take 5 deep breaths right before admitting your lie. It will help you relax."
3. "Repeat a simple slogan like, “My truth is like gold when my honesty's bold,” because it could give you the courage you need."

Parenting Tips - Caring Kids Learn Charismatic Skills

Sad and Lonely Boy SMALL

Parents Can Teach Kids Social Skills

CHILDREN  WITH SOCIAL SKILLS AND CHARISMA AREN'T BORN THAT WAY. To be charismatic takes charm and you can teach it.

We're not talking about popularity, manipulation, or vanity. We're talking about the true inner charm that cares about others. It will help them grow socially too.

If you model charm to your children, they can learn it from you. There are 3 things all people want that come under the Umbrella of Attention. Give those to others and you'll have charisma.

Use Sincere Eyes, Smiles, and Words with:

  1. Approval by looking for the good in your children and telling them what you see.
  2. Appreciation for the good things they do. "Thank you for..." or "I like the fact that you..."
  3. Affection using a touch, hug, pat on the back, kind word, kiss, or whatever is appropriate.

This is called the Triple A Formula. It is the best way to give what your child and others crave and that is, Attention.

Be a great listener. Hear what your children are saying. See how they're acting. Then try to understand how they're thinking and feeling.

Don't tell. Ask.

"How are you feeling?" Again be a great listener and repeat in your own words what they said. Here's why:

Charismatic listeners help others feel a real connection with them.

You want that with others and, especially, with your children.

Use these 3 tips, Approval, Appreciation, and Affection, as you ask your children the 6 parenting discussion topics in the following YouTube video. They will help your children develop the social skills they need to become the charismatic leaders of tomorrow.

The Emotional Child - How Parents Help Kids' Feelings

Mother and Son Talking

           How Parents Help Kids with
          Out-of-Control Feelings

DEPRESSED CHILDREN, ANGRY CHILDREN, FEARFUL CHILDREN OR ANY OVER-EMOTIONAL CHILD CAN BE HELPED. Today we'll offer a simple parenting technique you can teach.

This method uses your child’s imagination to handle out-of-control emotions.

First your over-sensitive child draws his very own emotion meter. Then he closes his eyes and visualizes moving the needle from poor (out-of-control) to fair, to good, and then excellent.

It’s fine if he doesn’t reach excellent because “good” emotions are good enough. The emotion meter can help children who are sad, angry, guilty, or anxious. Upset parents can use it for their own feelings too.

Watch this short slideshow presentation (only 12 slides) and copy the easy instructions below the slides. Then share it with your child when he is in a good mood. Practice it with him several times.

Ask him to let you know when he used it by himself to calm his emotions and feel better.

Remember to use it on yourself too and you'll never have to feel stuck in a bad mood.

Click on The Emotional Child and get started.

Please share with your friends and on your social media sites.

7 Family Discussion Questions Boost Kids' Self-Image

Family Reading SMALL
FUN DISCUSSIONS WITH KIDS PROMOTE FAMILY UNITY!

Praise or criticism, which motivates kids to do their best? Too much criticism often makes people bitter not better. Research advises us to give 3-6 compliments for every negative comment because kind remarks help lessen the sting from complaints.

If you must disapprove of your child’s behavior, there are 3 rules:

  1. Do it privately.
  2. Be brief, no lectures.
  3. Suggest a positive behavior or solution.

Goal for Giving Praise

You don’t want your child to live for other people’s approval. A nickname for pure approval seekers is "Love Slob."No one wants to hear their child called a "Love Slob."

Your goal in using praise is to increase your child’s inner motivation which means they do their best because that’s their positive self-image. It’s who they know they are.

Use our gift today which includes the poem, “I Caught You Being Good Today,” by downloading, discussing, and getting your children to answer the 7 discussion questions.

If you do, you’ll find out:

  1. How criticism feels to your children.
  2. Whether they notice each others mistakes more than their good qualities.
  3. What would motivate them the most, criticisms or compliments.
  4. If they’d like to focus on the good in each other more often.
  5. How they’d like to share with each member the good they see.
