School success is an experience your child can have. Our parenting expert, Roshni Shah is reminding us of 5 habits she's learned and promotes. Let's find out what she means.
Roshni Shah
I can't claim these tips to be my own but I do live by Stephen Covey's 7 Habits for Highly Effective People / Teenagers.
1. Attitude - approach a problem with a Win/Win attitude to find a solution that meet everyone's needs. This fosters mutual respect (between the parent, teacher and student) and ensures total commitment from all those involved.
2. Goals - discuss what the goal should be ...what outcome would solve the problem. Make sure it is realistic and achievable. Unrealistic expectations of a student with average capabilities or of a teacher trying to manage an unruly class of 30 causes stress.
3. Consider as many different ways as possible of achieving that goal. If people are not given a choice (however limited) they feel disempowered. Give them a choice and they immediately learn to evaluate and identify the pros and cons of each option and they learn to deal with the consequences.
4. Proactivity. Be proactive not reactive. We can't influence or change the behavior of others. We can only change our response to their behavior. So the next time you see a difficult situation developing, take a moment to understand before you try to be understood. In other words, listen first then talk.
5. Prioritize. Prioritizing is a skill learned through experience. Don't expect young people to be born with it. Help them by encouraging weekly planning rather than daily planning. Identify all the major issues for the forthcoming week (Chemistry assignment, friend's party, History test). Block out time for these issues and then plan everything else around it. Simple!
Roshni, thanks for sharing these. They make so much sense and help parents, students, and teachers.

Your children may not understand it now; but in the future, they will recognize the importance of these tips. Especially when it comes to prioritizing, it would have a strong bearing to their future.

It's just if a person doesn't have a sense of achievement in their real life, it's easy to lose themselves in a virtual world where they can get a false sense of accomplishment.
